Paleolithic minds misfit a delayed-return world
For most of human history people lived in an immediate-return environment where choices had near-term impact, but in roughly the last 500 years society shifted to a delayed-return environment where the greatest payoffs (paychecks, degrees, retirement) come much later; our paleolithic minds are still wired to prioritize the immediate outcome, creating a mismatch that favors bad habits.
