American Character Is Source of Optimism

The source of optimism for the 21st century is that what makes humanity great is best expressed in the American character—individualism, the frontier mindset, the blessings of geography and economy, and the unique ability to incorporate the best of different cultures—exemplified by the moon landing and by a Shackleton-like exploratory spirit that, while dying elsewhere, still lives in America.
