Greene's theme development process began with The 48 Laws of Power where he started with approximately 80 themes extracted from his readings of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, Von Clausewitz, and Nietzsche, then progressively reduced these through a culling process he compares to reducing a sauce, ultimately arriving at 48 laws as the optimal amount.
