Linguistic conventions emerge as solutions to repeated coordination problems: in tangram experiments, pairs describing abstract figures move from long descriptions to a shared shorthand label (e.g. 'the ice skater') within five or six rounds, because the shorthand has a big payoff in reduced effort once the convention is established.
