Both Extremes Corrupted Liberalism by Reaction
Liberalism was driven in a bad direction by good ideas carried to extremes on both sides: on the right, neoliberalism worshipped markets and ignored growing inequality, which spawned a left-wing reaction in the form of identity politics; identity politics reversed the classical-liberal premise of equal individual dignity by granting special recognition to formerly oppressed groups and using state power to enforce group identities, and the extreme right then borrowed the same identitarian language of victimization, so the two extremes fed on each other.
