In prison and crime-ridden urban neighborhoods, even non-aggressive people who simply want a normal life must establish a reputation for toughness so as not to be sitting ducks; they can project a credible willingness to be violent if challenged without it swallowing their identity, reaching an equilibrium where they are left alone—but those unable to project it become victims.
