Languages Show Constrained Diversity

Linguistic diversity is real but constrained: linguistic typology shows that languages do not carve up semantic space arbitrarily — for example, while a language may have three or twelve color terms, it will never have twelve words for shades of red and one word for everything else; the order in which color distinctions are added is predictable and functionally driven.
