Companies release valuable code as open source because mindshare is more valuable than the literal IP—it raises their status as an open-source-friendly company and, crucially, helps recruiting (the hardest thing for any company) by demonstrating their internal code culture and attracting developers who fit, doing with code what they cannot do with words.
