Erdoğan deliberately aggravates cleavages to stay in power

Turkey's failure to develop habits of regular power rotation and compromise stems from successive leadership mistakes—first repeated military interventions short-circuiting the process, and now Erdoğan's tactic of doing anything to remain in power, including deliberately aggravating cleavages of sect and nationality such as exploiting the Kurdish problem to build a nationalist base.
