Oil source rocks in North America were primarily deposited during the Jurassic period (when the Atlantic Ocean was open) and the Cretaceous, when stratified ocean conditions favorable to organic accumulation existed; these conditions are 'terrible for anything other than algae to live' but excellent for creating the organic-rich rocks that generate oil.
