The valorization of work was a genuine revaluation of values arising in the mid-17th century, overturning the prior aristocratic value system in which the best life was a life of leisure free of work; the Puritans inverted this with their beehive metaphor, casting idle landlords as drones to be expelled and worker bees as the honored producers.
