Take the countryside before the city
The enduring military lesson of the Mongols is to take the countryside first—the source of food and water—and then cut off and starve the city into surrender, the exact opposite of the American shock-and-awe strategy of seizing capital cities (Baghdad) that worked in WWII Europe but failed in Iraq, Vietnam, and elsewhere.
