In his final years Fred Phelps softened, repeatedly preaching humility ('only by pride cometh contention'), and was voted out of the church he founded after going onto the front lawn and calling out to the rainbow-painted Equality House across the street that they were 'good people'—which the elders treated as casting his lot with the sodomites, suggesting they considered him in his right mind at the time.
