To move and survive, brains must distinguish sense data arising from their own movements (largely predicted and cancelled out) from sense data arising from other sources (the genuinely surprising stuff); if you experience surprise from your own movements, something is seriously wrong, as Barrett discovered when an inner-ear infection destroyed her balance and made ordinary head movements produce vivid, disorienting prediction error.
