US Could Choose to Stabilize One Region
One falsifying variable is American agency: although the US no longer has the navy to secure global trade, it could choose to stabilize one or two regions (Western Europe, East Asia, South Asia, the Balkans) regardless of return, injecting life into the system for that region with possible second-order benefits elsewhere — so watch whether America goes as populist and nationalist as it currently appears.
