Glasnost, not Afghanistan, exposed the war and fueled discontent

Afghanistan did not bring down the Soviet Union; casualties were hushed up until Gorbachev's glasnost, and it was glasnost that allowed Afghanistan to be openly discussed and contribute to discontent—the USSR withdrew in February 1989 yet persisted two more years, so one should not put the cart before the horse.
