Merkel continued the policy of Ostpolitik (détente with the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe beginning in the 1970s) throughout her chancellorship, but retrospectively this policy appears as appeasement of a tyrant in light of Russia's 2022 aggression against Ukraine.
