Although silicon-based life is chemically plausible because silicon sits below carbon on the periodic table and shares its bonding properties, carbon is the more likely basis for life because it is five to ten times more abundant in the universe and is highly sticky, so carbon-based chemistry will dominate before silicon ever gets started.
