Understanding and shaping the goals of emergent cognitive systems (social structures, financial systems, Internet of Things, robotics) is an existential-level task for humanity because we are constantly building these systems without knowing their goals; we mistakenly assume they are either mechanical/controllable or random/chaotic, when in fact many are goal-driven systems.
