The English Civil War created two politically dominant groups: the Roundheads (Parliament, urban dwellers, Puritans from East Anglia suspicious of Catholic monarchy) and the Cavaliers (royalists, rural traditionalists, from southwest England). The Roundheads were ideologically driven, intolerant of dissent, and willing to use political violence before the war even started.
