Joseph Schumpeter argued in 1911 that entrepreneurs were essential to economic growth and were unusual people willing to take risks. The US economy has thrived on having lots of such individuals who can start things, but the shift to centralized tech innovation has resembled AT&T in the 60s or IBM where innovation became centralized and group-driven.
