Charles Babbage was a great 19th-century historian and critic/commentator on machines who traveled throughout Britain interviewing designers, industrialists, and engineers to determine how they made their machines, and aimed to build a machine that could supersede not just the skill and power of the human arm (as other machines did) but the skill and power of the human mind—what we would now call a computer.
