Iraq War Removed the Check on Iran

By destroying Saddam Hussein's government and botching the post-Baathist reconstruction, the US shattered the Mesopotamian check on Persian expansion that had existed for a millennium, allowing Iran to project power into southern Iraq, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon by empowering out-of-power sectarian groups, which (along with parallel Saudi sponsorship of Sunni militants) half burned the region down.
