Calder's first edition of the Boat Owner's Manual received critical feedback from ABYC about violations of ABYC standards, which prompted him to rapidly publish a second edition and then commit to attending ABYC meetings for 30+ years, where he has learned more than from any other source.

Many boat owners with life-long dreams of cruising have delayed gratification for 40+ years, saving money and working extra years to build their 'cruising kitty'; electrical system problems on their boat can stop them from achieving this delayed dream.

Calder began his sailing dream as a teenager after seeing the first single-handed round-the-world race (won by Robin Knox Johnson in Sue Haley's 32-foot double-ended boat) which was headline news in England and inspired a generation of dreamers to want to sail around the world.

Calder has written eight books; the two most well-known are 'The Boat Owner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual' (known in marine circles as 'the bible') and 'Marine Diesel Engines Maintenance, Troubleshooting and Repair.'

Calder and his wife set sail around the world with two small children and after 18 months they changed plans and now take shorter cruises mostly in the North Sea and extensively in the Caribbean.
