Cleavage Theory

Definition

Lipset and Rokkan's framework holding that a viable political party system must map onto the main durable division (cleavage) that actually defines a society—such as worker-versus-owner or ethnic identity; a party system built on a cleavage that does not reflect the society is fragile.
