Dollar Plumbing: Electronic vs Physical Dollars
Definition
A model of how dollars exist and move: physical currency (coins/bills) versus electronic dollars that take only two forms — bank deposits or securities (T-bills, repo). A new dollar can only be obtained by convincing a holder to sell, monetizing a security, or a bank creating money by lending; money markets are pass-through vehicles holding repo and T-bills, not cash.
