Definition
The principle that beneficial traits are not freely acquired but come at a cost, so an ability that seems advantageous (like regeneration) may be suppressed because it is coupled with maladaptive side effects (like cancer susceptibility or excessive metabolic demand). Organisms are products of compromise rather than optimal design.
