Heart Rate as a Confounded Metric
Definition
A framework for understanding that heart rate readings during training do not represent true exercise intensity because multiple independent physiological, environmental, and psychological variables simultaneously affect heart rate independent of exercise effort. The number on a heart rate monitor conflates exercise intensity with temperature, humidity, fatigue, stress, caffeine, sleep, illness, age, and cardiac drift.
