Definition
The distinction between activities done for the sake of a separate outcome (instrumental, 'do X for the sake of Y') versus those regarded as worthwhile in themselves (intrinsic). At technological maturity instrumental reasons largely vanish since outcomes can be obtained directly, forcing the question of which activities are intrinsically worthwhile.
