Octalysis Framework (Human Motivation Mapping)

Definition

Framework identifying eight core human motivations and mapping game mechanics to them, enabling prescriptive engagement design. The eight motivations: white-hat positive (empowerment and accomplishment, epic meaning and calling, ownership and possession, social influence and relatedness) and dark/negative (unpredictability and curiosity, loss and avoidance, scarcity and impatience, social pressure). Game mechanics (leaderboards, progress bars, badges, limited-time offers, exclusive access) connect to these motivations. The insight: engagement is not art but engineering—if you understand what motivates humans, you can design experiences that keep people engaged.
