Definition

The model that wakefulness builds up a homeostatic 'hunger' or pressure for sleep that accumulates over time like a debt, can be partly paid back, and is jettisoned by napping or extended morning sleep-in; bedtime restriction deliberately raises this pressure to consolidate sleep.
