Definition
The framework that the Puritan work ethic contained two contradictory strands held simultaneously: an exploitative strand treating relentless low-wage labor as ascetic discipline and proof of salvation, and a pro-worker strand sanctifying socially necessary work and demanding dignity and decent treatment for all workers.
