Transition from attempted to direct neural cursor control
Noland discovered that as decoder models improved, the cursor began anticipating his intentions before he physically attempted movement, and he eventually transitioned from attempted movement to pure imagined/direct neural control—looking at a target and having the cursor shoot there—a qualitatively different and profound experience that demonstrates direct neural device control is possible.
Attempted movement works better than imagined movement
For calibrating a BCI, attempted movement (physically trying to move a paralyzed body part) produces better decoding models than imagined movement, even though both signals are represented in the motor cortex; the difference relates to the naturalness and fatigue of imagining versus attempting, and models calibrated on attempted movement make it easier to later transition to direct neural control.
Suffering and darkness give meaning to the good
Hardship and suffering serve a purpose because there is no light without the dark; if everyone were happy all the time there would be no concept of good or bad and no reason to appreciate what we have, so trials build character and force us out of our comfort zones, which is how we grow.
