Claims by Ram Dass (20 of 4,132)
The fundamental purpose of spiritual practice, for Ram Dass, is to stabilize awakened consciousness in ordinary life—to maintain non-exclusive identification with one's soul awareness while functioning as an ego in the world, making this the most compassionate contribution to the world.
All humans exist simultaneously on multiple levels of consciousness: the physical ego level (with body and personality), the psychosocial identity level, the astral/archetypal level, and the soul/pure awareness level; most people identify exclusively with one or two levels and miss the richness of simultaneous multi-level awareness.
As people age and perceive their future as grimmer, they often flip into living in the past, repeating stories about missed opportunities, rather than living in the present; the present moment is the gateway to timelessness and freedom, but cultural fear of death pushes elderly people into the past.
The ideal state Ram Dass aims for is living simultaneously from two planes of consciousness: resting in awareness as a reflective presence, while simultaneously being fully engaged in thought, action, and change—being 'perfectly mindful and clear' while also fully active.
To help someone with psychological suffering, one should not begin from a place of exclusive ego identification with separateness, as this reinforces their sense of isolation; instead, one should cultivate a part of oneself that is free of identification, and from that perspective, help the person access their own liberated awareness.
