Proximal vs Distal Causes of Behavior
People get mired by confusing proximal and distal causes: proximally we make choices reflecting our tastes, quirks, values, and beliefs—this is real—but the decisive question is how we came to be the kind of person with those quirks, and that is the domain where free will dissolves.
Resistance Is About Protecting Self-Worth
What ultimately drives resistance to denying free will—especially among educated, accomplished people—is not the philosophical worry about blame but the fear of losing self-worth: 'does that mean I don't deserve my praise, my sense of purpose, my accomplishments?'; people in privileged positions identify strongly with the agency that supposedly made them who they are, and that is what feels attacked.

Retributive Punishment Is Driven by Pleasure
The dirty secret of retributive criminal justice is that righteous punishment is one of the most reliable ways to activate the brain's dopaminergic reward circuitry—people will pay to see norm violators punished—so the felt sense that punishment works (e.g. that the death penalty deters) is contaminated by how pleasurable punishing is.
Free Will Attributions Shrink Over History
Attitudes about free will have historically contracted: 300 years ago an epileptic seizure intuitively looked like demonic possession or a deal with Satan, and now it intuitively looks like neurological disease; this shows whole domains have had free will and moral condemnation subtracted out, and the task is to anticipate that today's intuitive judgments (e.g. that a remorseless murderer deserves harsh treatment) will look equally absurd in the future.
A Chimp With Human Neurons Would Invent Theology

Unpredictability Does Not Create Free Will
The future was not fixed at the Big Bang—chaos, nonlinearity, butterfly effects, and possibly quantum indeterminacy make the world genuinely unpredictable with multiple possible futures—but unpredictability provides no scope for free will, since being pushed around by random dice rolls confers no greater responsibility, and determinism is only visible retrospectively once one future has actualized.
Libet Experiments Are Irrelevant to Free Will
Benjamin Libet's experiments on neural readiness potentials preceding conscious awareness of intent, though fascinating and still debated 40 years later, are totally irrelevant to free will; the only relevant question is how the person became the kind of person who would form that particular intent at that moment—the distal causes—not the proximal millisecond timing.
Epigenetics Gives No Alibi for Freedom
Epigenetics is a powerful mechanism explaining how early environment regulates gene function (including multigenerational trauma effects via eggs and sperm), but it offers no support for free will—you cannot consciously choose to reverse the epigenetic changes from your childhood; it functions by the same deterministic billiard-ball rules as everything else.
Quarantine Model: Constrain, Don't Punish
Rejecting free will requires separating mitigating harm from retribution: you must still protect society from dangerous people, but the model is a car with failed brakes—you constrain it in a garage and research how to fix the brakes, but you don't take a sledgehammer to it for having a 'rotten soul'; punishment becomes at most an occasional instrumental tool to be deeply distrusted.
We Already Constrain Without Blame Routinely
Society already constrains people to protect others without invoking blame, intent, or retribution—keeping a child with a cold home from kindergarten, grounding an antihistamine-taking pilot from flying—so the no-free-will model of constraint without moralizing is not radical; we simply fail to recognize these as domains where we no longer believe in free will.
Dyslexia as a Template for De-Moralizing Behavior
Within living memory, a child failing to learn to read was attributed to laziness and stupidity until the discovery of dyslexia's micro-architectural cortical basis removed the moral blame and, crucially, opened the door to better remediation tools; this is a worked example of subtracting free-will-laden judgment that improved both compassion and intervention.
