During the Cold War, it was bipolar politically and militarily, but not economically—only the West was a true free market and was much much bigger economically than the Eastern Block.

Since 1990, the US share of global economy and the West's share have gotten much smaller, while China's economic power grew as its economy opened up and the country sought a bigger role in world trade.
