China's Secret Strategy EXPOSED: Warwick Powell shares What You Didn't Know
What this covers
Today's guest on the show is Warwick Powell, a senior fellow of the Taihe Institute in Beijing as well as an adjunct professor at the Queensland University of Technology, professor Powell offers a deep historical context on the Taiwan issue, framing it as an unresolved civil war between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC). Powell explains that the conflict stems from a civil war in the late 1940s, when the ROC retreated to Taiwan after the PRC's victory on the mainland. Powell emphasizes the complexity of this situation, noting that it is often misunderstood, particularly in the West, where Taiwan is seen in terms of military conflict rather than as part of a civil war that both sides are reluctant to reignite.

Powell argues that the Taiwan question is fundamentally an unfinished Chinese civil war whose resolution depends on whether Taiwan formalizes independence—a move unlikely to occur given military realities and deep family connections across the Strait—and that global geopolitical transition reflects not a simple baton-pass between hegemons but a shift from unipolar to multipolar, interconnected systems driven by financialization decay in the West and productive capacity diffusion to the Global South.
- Taiwan's status is defined by unresolved civil war law, not geography; militarization won't change incentives and war is unlikely unless Taiwan declares independence
- The US military advantage has eroded due to Chinese hypersonic missiles and industrial capacity; moral superiority narratives cannot substitute for lost material preponderance
- Western economies financialized rather than reindustrialized; China's abundant low-cost manufacturing and energy infrastructure now enable Global South development, decentralizing power away from Western hubs

As early as 1942-1943, the US Department of Defense and State Department began drawing up plans for how Taiwan would be governed in a postwar environment, with the debate focused not on whether Taiwan would be occupied by Americans (which was assumed), but whether a Chinese front was needed and whether sovereignty should be transferred immediately to the Republic of China or held for a period under American watchful eye.
“the island of Taiwan has been identified one from the early 1940s about 1942 43 onwards as being pivotal to the US's own position and interests in that part of the world and in 1943 the Department of Defense and the state department actually began drawing up plans about how the island of Taiwan would be governed in a postwar environment and the the big question between these two departments American departments recall was not whether or not Taiwan would be occupied by the Americans that was the given the plan was to occupy Taiwan militarily”
Economic development and economic systems are fundamentally energy transformation systems; the ability for countries to access cheap energy-generation and storage technologies opens pathways for economic development previously impossible, further propelling the emergence of multipolarity as more nations achieve energy sovereignty.
“if Economic Development and economic systems are energy transformation systems as I've argued then the ability for countries to access energy generating and capturing and storage technologies that cost cheaper than they've ever had before opens the pathway for these countries to undertake economic development that they have been until now unable to do so and that further propels the development of multipolarity right”
Nobody would rationally provoke warfare for the sake of it when avoiding it is possible, but more importantly, nobody would provoke a war when their chances of winning are low, making military conflict initiation irrational for any Taiwan stakeholder given current military balances.
“nobody's game to bring it on and for good reason one I think it's a crazy idea that people should provoke Warfare for the sake of it if you can avoid it right there are better things for human beings to do with their Ingenuity their creativity their time and resources than to provoke and instigate Warfare but right so that's the first thing you know you can either bring it on but they're not going to for that reason but the second reason is is that they're not g to bring it on because they're not likely to win right so provoking a war is a Bad Thing generally provoking a war when your chances of winning are low yeah is a stupid thing”
The traditional Western IR model views the world as a series of disconnected atoms with intrinsic agency and separate interests that collide with each other, but a distributed multipolar world requires thinking about nations less as autonomous atoms and more as fundamentally interconnected relationships where the focus shifts from atoms to interactions.
“the traditional uh Western IR model views the world as a series of disconnected atoms that are then connected with each other and each of those atoms has an agency of some sort that is um intrinsic to itself and that it has a set of interests that are intrinsic to itself and so this is sort of the realist view of the world and then then these these atoms collide with each other and they've got to negotiate with each other they survival I think this more distributed World requires us to think about the interconnections between nations people civilizations and Global communities that sees them less as a series of at of autonomous atoms that happen to bump into each other but as a series of fundamentally interconnected relationships so we move from a focus on the atoms to a focus on the interactions”
Interests are not autonomous things brought to the negotiating table separately from others' interests; rather, interests are shaped by relationships and are fundamentally intertwined with others' interests, requiring framing that recognizes this deep meshing of interests.
“the interests that each of us has are interests that are shaped by our relationships they don't get brought to the table by themselves...the idea of intertwining of and meshing of being fully in meshed with each other is actually the necessary starting point and if we can begin to do that we start to think about this issue of change not necessarily as just a handing over of the Baton from one Empire to the next but as a qualitative evolution of a system a globally interconnected system that requires actors to modify how they behave in that system for the system itself to thrive”
We are at a moment where humanity is struggling to grapple with addressing interactions between deeply interconnected nations and communities where the butterfly effect means that concerns and actions of one have implications for how others frame their concerns and affect others.
“we're at a moment in global cross- civilizational and international relations where we're struggling to come to grips with addressing these interactions the fact that we are deeply in connected with each other is actually the starting point not the fact that we happen to be connected with each other the interests that each of us has are interests that are shaped by our relationships they don't get brought to the table by themselves so this is the idea of indivisibility that the world is so interconnected now the butterfly effect so to speak that as a complex system we need to appreciate that the concerns of one and the actions of one have implications for how others will frame their own concerns and of course how it will affect others”
US healthcare expenditure is 18% of GDP (global average ~10%), but healthcare's critical KPIs (life expectancy, infant mortality) are heading in the wrong direction; the GDP boost from healthcare costs does not translate to health outcomes, instead benefiting financial asset holders while the body politic's dream narrative erodes.
“the expansion of markets like health insurance and the role of the quote Health expenditure sector in the United States Health expenditure now makes up 18% of the US GDP the global average is about 10% this 18% does what well a health system's critical kpi should be increased life expectancy and reduced infant mortality it would seem to me that they're two reasonable kpis for a health system and yet on both of those measures the United States is heading in the wrong direction but healthc are costs are rising so the GD P impact of the health system is a positive impact that's not helping the body politic right”
Arrighi's framework describes hegemonic cycles: early dominance involves capital mobilization in real productive systems; as money capital accumulates, dominant powers vacate production and become financiers of the next generation of productive capital in other countries (Dutch became bankers of British manufacturing; British financed colonial production networks; US follows the same arc).
“the pattern was basically that in the early days of a dominant hegemonic system the capital would be mobilized in real economy production systems and as you do that you accumulate uh growing amounts of money so um so these production systems enable the accumulation of capital and at some point there's so much money Capital accumulated that you can't keep investing that in production systems unless you expand physically so that starts to explain the physical expansion but at some point those with the money capital progressively vacate productive Capital work and become the bankers of the next generation of productive Capital which usually is in a different country so the Dutch took over the production systems from the Italian city states but as the Dutch accumulated large amounts of money Capital through production and trade in time the Dutch became the financiers of British capitalism mhm and aband production systems themselves”
Civilizational exceptionalism narratives from Western liberalism and enlightenment position the West as the pinnacle of human civilizational achievement, creating a thick moralism that either justifies transforming others in the Western image through missionary work or overcoming resistance by vanquishing it, with the assumption that 'history must march on' and the West is the bearer of history's mission.
“that idea of civilizational uh exceptionalism that comes from liberalism that comes from the enlightenment that positions us as the West as the Pinnacle of human civilizational achievement and it behoves us therefore either through our missionary work transform others in this image to push out the good life if you will or if there is resistance to that to overcome that resistance and Vanquish it right because history must march on and we are the bearers of History's mission”
Trade is consequence of changing production location rather than cause of job losses—the real issue is distributional: while trade creates net aggregate welfare gains, if benefits concentrate among few while large disenfranchised groups are harmed, inequality and anger result; benefits must be shared across economy for trade to be fair.
“trade has been blamed for the loss of jobs trades a consequence of a change in the location of production systems it's not actually the cause so much as the consequence that's probably the first thing I would say but if trade delivers in aggregate terms net beneficial outcomes the problem that nation states have is how do you share those benefits if you can share those benefits across your economy and across society and use those benefits to enable those who have been displaced through these processes of change to adapt and take advantage of New Opportunities then you've succeeded in growing aggregate welfare and doing it in a fair way but if you enable the proceeds of of trade to be concentrated in the hands of a relative few then over time you get concentrated groups and large groups of disenfranchised and understandably angry people”
The West is experiencing displacement anxiety as its unipolar dominance erodes; grief over loss of dominance manifests as rejection of changing reality, intensification of narrative and spectacle (simulacra), and angry lashing out against those perceived to have taken what was lost, rationalized through narratives of Western civilizational exceptionalism and liberal universalism.
“you experience a form of displacement anxiety and that displacement anxiety if we want to sort of psychoanalyze it if you will brings with it this experience of grief right so we've got an anxiety that the world's changing around us and that our position in a dominant position is no longer what it once was and we are losing that so we're going to grieve that right we're going to grieve the loss of our dominant position the unquestioned unbridled dominant position”
Real economies are fundamentally energy transformation systems requiring the supply of food for people and fuel for machines; economies with energy sovereignty (food and fuel production) can withstand financial sanctions because their productive capacity remains intact, as demonstrated by Russia's resilience under 2022 sanctions.
“if an economic system is an energy transformation system then you've got to address two core things you've got to provide food for people and you got to provide fuel for machines right and if you can do those two things then your economy won't collapse regardless of the financial sanctions that are being imposed which is what we saw and Russia happens to be yeah one of the world's biggest producers of food for people and fuel to machines”
If actors can navigate paradoxes of empowerment and find ways to empower themselves while empowering others, we could end up in a world on the other side that is not without conflict and differences but one that compels us to address differences in less kinetic ways because interests are too mutually intertwined to resort to violence as first option.
“if we can navigate our way through these paradoxes then I think we could end up on the other side so to speak in a world that is um not a world without conflict and without differences but in a world that reshapes behavior that compels us to address differences um in less kinetic ways right um and because our interests are too mutually intertwined to in a sense resort to kinetic Solutions as our first Port of Call”
Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods had no economic effect (or harmed intended beneficiary communities) but delivered significant political dividend by feeding the narrative of taking action to recover lost dominance, demonstrating that Western policy now prioritizes narrative management over economic logic.
“there's been a study by David a um an American Economist who's studied the impact of um trade and Technology change on uh job displacements across the US for many decades and he he and his co-authors published a paper earlier this year looking at the effects of trump tariffs and basically concluded that at best they had no effect um at worst actually disadvantaged some of the intended beneficiary communities but it did deliver a political dividend”
Fictitious capital—claims on future value such as stocks, bonds, derivatives, and futures—can be created through legal and technological processes with keystrokes, made tradable through liquid markets, and turned over countless times before maturity, with total aggregate trading volume far exceeding the value of the underlying future claim.
“we've basically seen the explosion of the industry and markets for financial instruments which are claims on future value whether they're stocks or bonds or derivatives or Futures all of these instruments provide the holder with a right to claim value in the future either by way of an income which you would get from an interest payment or from a dividend from stocks or from a capital gain”
These integrated demographic solutions are not implemented through electoral cycle initiatives but through 'sustained and evolving policy orientation' developed over decades, which China has been doing while Western nations have not.
“you don't do that with a click of a finger and you don't do that as a you know a 12 month or an electoral cycle initiative you've got to do this as a sustained and evolving policy orientation and CH has been doing that”
Blockchain and distributed ledger technology emerged from Libertarian anti-government tradition in the US but became central to China's economic development by 2019 when Xi Jinping announced it as critical infrastructure, representing a technology transcending its ideological origins.
“blockchains emerged in the United States um you know off the back of s nakamoto's white paper um very much from a Libertarian um sticker to the man tradition right yeah and and yet by 2019 so 10 years basically after uh the white paper the Bitcoin white paper shinpin had announced that blockchain was a critical piece of infrastructure for China's economic development now how does a technology that emerged in in a Libertarian sticker to the man environment become a central piece of technology in an environment that most people would say is not libertarian”
American manufacturing output in dollar terms has not declined over 40 years, but the concern is livelihood distribution—automation and technology introduction have concentrated job losses geographically and demographically among particular populations creating concentrated groups of disenfranchised angry people.
“I should add one caveat in all of this and that is that from a pure output point of view measured in dollar terms American manufacturing has not declined um it continues to produce stuff and so the concern in terms of how it plays out as far as the political economy or the body politic is is concerned is that it affects livelihoods right so when you look at the demography and the geographical distribution of the impacted demographies the processes of hollowing out whereby Automation and the continual introduction of Technologies into American manufacturing over the last 40 years it's affected large groups of people who have been concentrated in particular parts of the United States”
The US has historically seen Taiwan as serving two roles: either as a launchpad to pursue American ambitions in China or as a bulwark to hold back communist China; these roles were rooted in 19th-century American Protestant missionary efforts to 'Christianize' China, a spiritual warfare project that continued through the 1950s 'who lost China' debate and McCarthy-era politics.
“the island of Taiwan has fulfilled largely one of two roles historically for the US it's either been a launching pad to pursue its the US's Ambitions in relation to China r large or it's been a bull walk as a way of holding back any risks or threats that the US deems particularly communist China to be so the idea of it being a Launchpad really relates to a particular historical attitude that the United States going back well over a century has had towards China RIT large”
China poses a particularly 'daunting challenge' because as a primarily non-Christian nation it represents the 'Godless Barren territory' that must be conquered in the spiritual warfare framework, and the energized missionary zeal in certain pockets of American political spectrum regarding China is underpinned by '10-40 window' theology identifying the territory between 10° and 40° latitude as needing Christianization for God's dominion.
“China for some is why China poses such a daunting challenge because China if we go back to our discussion around this question of Taiwan represents the Godless Barren territory that must be conquered and unsurprisingly the energized missionary Zeal that we now see in certain pockets of the American political spectr about China uh is really underpinned by this idea of spiritual warfare”
Internal decay in Western body politic undermines the ability to prosecute the American Dream globally; the dream was America's primary export and soft power, but as the domestic dream fails (inequality, health crisis, loss of competitiveness) the foundation for global missionary work collapses.
“not only are we grieving the loss of our status in the world but we are also grieving the loss of the dream that we offer to the world as well ah so the United States is no longer in a position to be the light on the hill which has so long animated not only its own missionary purpose but it has given sustenance to that missionary purpose on the basis that it could deliver something that resembled the dream and when the dream has become a nightmare for many the ability to prosecute the dream globally also begins to fall apart”
Financial capital is attracted to where turnover is quickest—trading and speculative markets where instantaneous trading enables faster monetization than energy transformation systems, which is why money capital flows to financial markets rather than productive investment.
“where does money Capital go if money Capital's driver is to accumulate more of itself its driver is to accumulate more money Capital so it will always be attracted to where the turnover is quickest right to trading to the speculative dynamics of of Markez instruments where there is deep markets with high liquidity”
The idea that kinetic conflict over Taiwan is imminent or inevitable is a Western assumption with very little evidentiary support; what actually exists is a consistent position by the PLA that reunification is preferred peacefully but will be achieved through other means if necessary, and this does not constitute a war plan or a preemptive threat.
“the um it's interesting that a lot of people leap to this conclusion that somehow the uh the People's Republic of China and the people's Liberation Army will make a preemptive move to um militarily occupy the island and um and there's actually very little evidence that they will”
Western political economies have shifted from a model where Finance Capital enabled real economic development to one where Finance Capital itself becomes the purpose; money is now mobilized to monetize fictitious capital claims on future value (stocks, bonds, derivatives) rather than to fund productive capacity.
“over the last 40 years the structure of the political economy of the United States and other Western Nations has evolved from one in which Finance Capital played a played an enabling role in the economic logic of development to a model in which Finance capital and its own Dynamics becomes the purpose itself so we move from from a world where Finance is mobilized to enable other things to happen in what I would call the real economy of use value to one in which Finance is mobilized in its own name to monetize fictitious Capital claims on future value that's abstract”
American manufacturing production system cannot fulfill existing orders, let alone new ones; placing more orders without first expanding productive capacity is futile; increasing production capacity requires sustained capital investment, access to raw materials, and skilled labor mobilization over years, not months.
“the Republic of China has orders in place that have been delayed so they could place more orders every day of the week that's but that's not the problem right they they can place the orders but that's not the problem the problem is whether or not those orders can be fulfilled yeah and the orders simply can't be fulfilled now the typical um response is to say well you know you throw enough money at it and at some point in time the system will be augmented with fixed Capital Investments access to Raw Mater materials mobilization of skilled staff to a point where it will be able to increase its production output well that's going to take quite some time”
China is accused of 'overcapacity' but this is a political narrative misdiagnosis; the flip side of China's production growth is chronic undercapacity elsewhere; as China produces more, a larger proportion is consumed domestically, demonstrating that domestic income growth is absorbing the increased output.
“the argument that's run is that China produces too much and it doesn't consume enough and therefore needs to export what it produces too much of okay and that is made out to be a line of criticism sure interestingly that line of criticism doesn't get applied to other countries that have export Services as well historically Japan North Korea Germany as classic cases in point”
China faces significant demographic challenges (aging population) but responds through multi-faceted approaches: improved health systems keep aging populations healthier and productive longer; automation (China is the world's largest industrial robot implementer) replaces aging labor; skilled education investments enable remaining workers to perform non-repetitive cognitive work; expanding economic networks into the Global South provides younger labor.
“an aging population um uh has a few Dimensions to it one is is that in fact people are healthier as they age so we know this so longevity other than the recent data in the United States um would you know shows that that people are living longer and healthier in in China what that means is that they're also more productive longer”
Distributed ledgers and blockchain networks model the multipolar world: nodes with mutual responsibilities maintain system integrity; no single actor can unilaterally undermine others; every node's incentive in maintaining network security aligns with collective security; this is conceptually isomorphic to a multipolar international system.
“in some ways an environment where there is a dominant hedgemon is an easier one to get our heads around and it's an easier one to order the world around but once you've got an environment where there is no single Dominator then the relationships become more fluid some people would say that that is a much Messier world less certain um harder to predict but in many ways it also creates the environment that forces new ways of thinking about the relationship between nations so the second point that I would raise is that the traditional uh Western IR model views the world as a series of disconnected atoms that are then connected with each other”
The Taiwan question relates fundamentally to an unfinished Chinese Civil War concerning who runs China and defines China's sovereign jurisdiction, with the Communists prevailing in 1949–1950 and the Nationalists retreating to Taiwan with the initial aim of reconstituting forces to reclaim the mainland, not to establish an independent sovereign country.
“the question of the island of Taiwan relates fundamentally to an unfinished Civil War concerning who runs China and ultimately um who defines what the Sovereign jurisdiction of China is and this Civil War um has in a sense quasy concluded or concluded 90% or thereabouts in late 1949 early 1950 when the Communists prevailed and the nationalists who at that stage was the government of the Republic of China retreated to the island of Taiwan”
The gap between global financial trading volumes (~1,200 trillion per year in FX and derivatives) and global trade volumes (~40 trillion) demonstrates that financial markets are detached from real value creation; as financial asset prices grow driven by liquidity injection, the capacity of the real economy to meet value claims deteriorates.
“you take the total value of global trade $40 trillion or thereabouts and you compare that to the total value of global FX and derivatives transactions 1,200 trillion something like that per year right compare those two worlds which one delivers improved living standards to the majority of people and which one delivers improved living standards to a minority of people”
The PLA's capacity to encircle Taiwan and establish a defensive cordon has been demonstrated repeatedly (post-Pelosi visit, post-congressional delegations), and American military preponderance has eroded; American military analysts openly acknowledge the US cannot prevail in a Pacific conflict, only hope to inflict sufficient losses to deter China.
“over the last three years or so the uh the mainland has actively demonstrated and consistently demonstrated the capacity now to rapidly encircle the island and in effect establish a defensive Cordon around the island it did so after the Pelosi visit and more recently after the uh the last visit of um a Congressional Delegation from the United States”
Over 90% of the value of the New York Stock Exchange is owned by the top 10% of Americans; quantitative easing over the last 15 years has put more money capital into the hands of security traders than into household pockets, benefiting asset owners and leaving wage earners facing price inflation without income growth.
“over 90% of the value of the New York Stock Exchange is owned by 10% of Americans right we know that quantitative easing over the last 15 years has actually put more money Capital into the hands of those who are involved in the processes of trading Securities and other assets assets Capital assets than into the pockets of households”
China's trade relationships have shifted: by 2020 the Global South was becoming a more important economic partner to China than the Global North, and this pattern continues; the US and Europe are no longer relatively as important to China as the rest of the world.
“by 2020 China's trade relationships with the global South was growing at a rate that was many times faster than its trade relationships with the global North and that in fact the global South was becoming a more important economic partner actually in aggregate terms than the global North was for China yes right so the United States and Europe simply put was relatively speaking no longer as important to China as the rest of the world and that continues to that that pattern it Contin continues to roll out”
Personal sovereignty in a multipolar era requires grounding in diverse knowledge (STEM, philosophy, social sciences, ethics) to enable creative navigation of a complex world, coupled with material strategies (distributed renewable energy, community resource-sharing networks) that balance independence with mutual empowerment.
“there are those who will say going off grid makes you Sovereign and that's your classic we're going to become sovereign and disconnected from the world we do need to think about how we interact with others in a way that Empower others so that it also empowers ourselves so through collaborating with others we are also able to make ourselves more independent and stronger right now these are a whole series of paradoxes that I think we need to navigate”
Martin observes he lived in globalization era (40 years old) with increasing access to cheaper and more variety of goods and increased cooperation, suggesting that era is probably ending and something yet to be defined is emerging requiring adaptation to new frameworks.
“you know we're we're moving from an era of certainty and globalization and you know I'm I'm 40 years old my whole life has been the the era of globalization increased access to cheaper and more variety of goods and all this stuff and more cooperation and that era is probably over whatever's next is to be defined but we'll live through it and we'll see it”
When financial products become more prevalent and complex playing greater role within domestic economy, employment levels in traditional manufacturing industry decline, with studies showing actual cause-and-effect relationship between financialization and deindustrialization.
“there's plenty of studies that show that as Financial products became more prevalent and complex played a greater role within the domestic economy in the United States that employment levels in traditional industry manufacturing industry declin and there is actually a cause and effect relationship between the two”
Ponzi Finance (Minsky's concept) describes the current dominant pattern in the G7 and broader Western economies: borrowing today to settle yesterday's obligations before making claims on the real economy, a pattern that requires perpetual refinancing and cannot be sustained indefinitely.
“we're going to call what we call refinancing right we're going to create a new instrument today that allows us to settle the obligations of the expiring instrument right without having to place a claim on the real economy we can kick this can down the road now Minsky described this phase of course in terms of being pomy Finance sure we borrow today to settle the accounts of yesterday before having to make a claim on the real economy this is the dominant pattern of Contemporary American political economy and not just American political economy but the dominant pattern of the G7”
Chinese hypersonic missile technology has enabled the PLA to operate past the first island chain, and China's industrial capacity to manufacture missiles at high volumes can overwhelm US air defense capabilities, fundamentally altering the strategic balance.
“Chinese Hypersonic Technologies uh have enabled the Chinese to go past the first island chain [and] China's industrial capacity to manufacture at high volumes and in quick Pace the kinds of um uh missiles that would essentially overwhelm through Dent of number any of the air defense capabilities both ground to Air and sea to air defense capabilities that the United States could must”
The conflict in Ukraine and the situation in the Red Sea where Houthis have demonstrated capability despite technological disadvantage show that superior technology and military hardware do not guarantee victory, demonstrating limitations of Western and American military capabilities against peer or near-peer adversaries.
“the conflict in Ukraine I think is demonstrating the limitations of um Western and American Military capabilities to um to dominate peer um adversaries”
China is the world's largest implementer of robotic systems industrially and has rolled out necessary 5G communication infrastructure enabling automation without which complex machinery instructions cannot be delivered quickly and cheaply across networks.
“China is now the world's largest implementer of robotic systems industrially it has rolled out the the necessary Communications infrastructure systems to enable that to happen um you know I think one of your previous guest David golden will have spoken a lot about um uh the the 5G networks industrial 5G networks that rolled out across China without which you don't get automation right so you've got to have the ability to deliver instructions complex instructions to a network of machines quickly and cheaply so that the machines will do what they're instructed to do all of that is being rolled out being rolled out very successfully”
In the electric vehicle sector, absorption rate (percentage of manufacturing consumed domestically) between 2000-2003 hovered between 75-85%, and in the first seven months of the current year has risen to over 90%, despite output growing over 90%, demonstrating that Chinese manufacturing growth is primarily driven by domestic demand absorption rather than export dependency.
“interestingly electric vehicles is a great classic case in point maybe not so classic because it's so new but between 2000 2001 2002 2003 those four years the absorption rate domestically hovered between 75 and 85% year onye as output grew interestingly for the first seven months this year absorption rate is the amount of manufacturing that is consumed at home correct right of anys new energy Vehicles okay so so these EVS almost three quarters of them basically um were being absorbed domestically up to 85% and interestingly in the last s months just in this sector alone outputs continued to grow over 90% is now being sold domestically over 90% of output is being sold domestically”
Deep familial ties across the Taiwan Strait—brothers, sisters, cousins separated during the conclusion of the civil war in 1949–1950—continue to maintain relationships and do business together; hundreds of thousands of Taiwan residents live and work full-time on the mainland with ongoing family connections, making unprovoked warfare against family members a ludicrous idea.
“there's actually deep familial ties Across The Straits there are brothers and sisters who actually live on both sides of The Straits who are separated during the unfolding of the conclusion of the that phase of the Civil War in 4950 um there are cousins um and there are family members who continue to maintain relationships”
The transition from manual repetitive work (done by robots) and cognitive repetitive work (done by computers) requires humans to occupy non-repetitive dimensions of both manual and cognitive labor; education and skill development are foundational to enabling this occupational transition.
“the transition that's taking place is that robots are increasingly do doing the manual repetitive work computers are increasingly going to do your cognitive repetitive work so human beings necessarily must find their ways to the non-repetitive dimensions of manual and cognitive work whatever those things happen to be right and training people with education is fundamental to enabling human humans to fulfill those parts of the um the the occupation Matrix”
Intense price competition in Chinese manufacturing is driving prices toward marginal cost, squeezing profit margins; firms respond through volume growth and innovation, leading to abundance pricing (value transferred to buyers through lower prices) rather than scarcity-based margin maintenance (confected scarcity).
“this idea of overc capacity is largely a political narrative I need to expand on the the definition of overc capacity for me sure the argument that's run is that China produces too much and it doesn't consume enough and therefore needs to export what it produces too much of okay and that is made out to be a line of criticism sure interestingly that line of criticism doesn't get applied to other countries that have export Services as well historically Japan North Korea Germany as classic cases in point”
The only trigger for military conflict over Taiwan would be if the Legislative Yuan moves to recognize Taiwan as a separate territory through the constitutional mechanisms available, officially separating Taiwan Island as a distinct sovereign territory and forgoing historical and continuing claims over mainland China, which would prompt rapid surrounding of the island and create circumstances for conflict.
“what would trigger that that's the real question what would trigger that well I think only one thing would trigger it and that would be moves by the Legislative UN in Taiwan to recognize Taiwan as a separate territory in other words to go through those mechanisms I described to you earlier about how the Republic of China can separate out uh the territory of the Taiwan Island”
Claims that Taiwan should spend more on military procurement to reduce American obligation to defend it actually reflect US interests in increasing sales from American military industry, not genuine strategic advice, because the Republic of China's administration cannot manufacture most military hardware itself and US production capacity is already inadequate to meet existing orders.
“what this tells you is that the the administration on the is actually doesn't have any real capacity to manufacture any of this stuff anyway so when they talk about the the demand of the island to spend more what it really means is that they want the island to buy more things from the United States military industry that's all it wants”
Empowering children through education and enabling them to autonomously navigate the world enhances relationship quality between parent and child because autonomy breaks cycle where parent as dominant provider remains trapped in obligatory relationship without reciprocal autonomy.
“you can Empower children through Education and Training and providing them with um examples of how to lead a life but in doing that and enabling them them to uh cultivate an ability to autonomously navigate the world that also enhances your ability to relate with them as well because if in a sense if you're the dominant provider then in so much as you may be the um the the hedgemon you're also trapped in relationship where you don't have autonomy because you have embedded obligations”
Western geopolitical discourse on Taiwan is third-party generated by Western analysts and commentators, not voices representing the lived experiences and perspectives of the people directly affected by the situation, which disrespects the actual human connections and relationships that sustain the status quo.
“we not only forget that but in forgetting that we also disrespect that”
Going off-grid to become materially sovereign through disconnection from world systems is less effective than using distributed network renewable energy and shared battery storage with communities where individual energy independence reinforces rather than replaces interdependence.
“I can be more energy Independent by having a distributed Network renewable energy etc etc but I can also become more powerful by having a distributed network of batteries that that I share with a community because I won't always need some of the energy and others might need more at different times”
The Republic of China's 1990s constitutional amendments defined Taiwan Island as 'free China' and established two-step legal mechanisms (legislative resolution followed by referendum among residents of free China areas) by which the territory could be altered, but there is zero political capacity for any party to achieve the numbers needed for the first step.
“the Amendments that were undertaken in the 1990s enabled uh the a specific series of definitions to be incorporated in relation to the territory of Taiwan Ireland itself um which framed the territory of Taiwan Island itself as part part of essentially free China and then there was the Communist occupied China right so there's free China and communist occupied China now the constitution of the Republic of China also provides for mechanisms by which the Republic of China can alter its territory and this is an important part in this discussion because these mechanisms exist so that there is a law mechanism by which this particular Sovereign entity can go about making changes to the territories that it claims to govern”
Both Hong Kong and Taiwan were historically colonized by foreign powers—Taiwan by Japan (late 1800s–1945) and Hong Kong by Britain (until 1997)—and both are now recognized as part of Chinese sovereign territory, making them parallel cases of decolonization and return to Chinese control.
“both of these geographical territories were historically subject to foreign Colonial control so in the case of the island of Taiwan it was subordinated to the Japanese from the late 1800s through to um 1945 in the case of Hong Kong it was a colonial territory of the British crown until 1997 so both of these territories were actually recognized as part of something that we call China whether it was Ching Dynasty China the Republic of China and subsequently the People's Republic of China that were occupied Ed by foreign powers and have been returned to um a Chinese Sovereign control of one sort or another”
Trump's comment welcoming Chinese EV manufacturers to set up operations in the United States represents an indirect acknowledgment that previous policy responses (tariffs, exclusion) had failed; it signals recognition that the solution requires building productive capacity domestically rather than blocking imports or demanding allies buy more.
“he also said but I'd welcome Chinese EV manufacturers to setup shop in the United States now that observation is actually the pivotal one because the key of addressing these issues is always not through trade per se trades an effect but it's to address your foundational productive capabilities in the first instance so there's no point cutting off trade or pricing trade if you're not in a position to address production you can't sell what you what you don't produce”
