The Sagrada Familia's SECRETs Uncovered!

Josep Bocabella, a Barcelona bookseller and printer, founded the Josephites (association of devotees of St. Joseph), and after visiting Rome's Basilica of St. Peter and the Sanctuary of Loretto in the late 1860s, decided to replicate their majesty in Barcelona by purchasing land in the Eixample district in 1881.

Construction of the Sagrada Família began on March 19, 1882, under architect Francisco de Paula de Villar, who designed it in Gothic style similar to the Sanctuary of Loretto; Bocabella later fired de Villar because he felt the design lacked grandeur, and Professor Joan Martorell recommended his young student Antoni Gaudí as a replacement.

The Sagrada Família is designed as a Latin cross with a central nave, a transept cutting across the nave, and an apse at the back; Gaudí uniquely designed three elaborately embellished facades—the Nativity facade (birth of Jesus and early life), the Passion facade (crucifixion and death), and the Glory facade (resurrection and main entrance)—rather than the single facade typical of Catholic churches.

Gaudí used columns made of different materials based on structural load: thick columns of red porphyry (a volcanic rock) support the heaviest loads and tower weight, smaller dark columns of basalt support medium loads, and white granite columns project exterior light, reflecting his integrated approach to material science and aesthetics.

Professor Joan Martorell taught Antoni Gaudí a revolutionary engineering and construction technique called graphic statics—a method used today to calculate and model structural stability through mathematical analysis of forces, though it requires heavy computation especially for complex structures.

The most contentious and controversial remaining challenge for the Sagrada Família is the Glory facade, which still hasn't been built and requires demolishing residential buildings to complete; the original designs included a massive frontal staircase, but most sketches and plans were lost during the Spanish Civil War, allowing the government to permit residential complexes to be built in the required space.

Gaudí was struck by a tram on June 7, 1926, while lost in prayer counting beads on his Rosary, died from delayed medical treatment at a public hospital on June 10, 1926, after 40 years devoted to the Sagrada Família.
