AI chips are all 3nm or smaller and all come from the same city (Taiwan). While this sounds simple, there are 9,000 companies involved in the manufacturing system to make those fabrication plants work, and over half have only one product for one customer with no competition anywhere else. If any small section breaks (like Germany in demographic collapse), we lose the ability to make chips at all or at scale. Rebuilding that ecosystem takes time.

Developing new technologies requires large numbers of people in their 20s and 30s who are social, integrated, can work as teams, and can operationalize and mass-manufacture innovations; this process generates no income until mass manufacturing, requiring huge capital that came from boomers' retirement savings in the 2000s-2010s.

There is no tipping point at which resources become truly scarce because technology continuously liberates new resource sources; humans are 'scarcity bound' by evolutionary psychology, but this is no longer the constraint.

Industrialization plus technology introduced synthetic fertilizer, which was applied at scale and increased the amount of land that could be cultivated by a factor of three, keeping humanity alive. As long as there is no disruption to the synthetic fertilizer supply chain, we're good. China is the single largest source of phosphate, Belarus and Russia are the largest source of potash, nitrogen is a natural gas derivative, and we will lose access from Russian space and the Middle East. We will have to hack the plant genome to grow more food with less fertilizer, and it is a race whether we can improve yields genetically faster than we lose synthetic fertilizer production.

Individuals have a genetic commitment to ensure propagation of the species not just in continuation but in such a way that we are healthier and happier, and the question of whether the future will be abundant is vital because it drives behaviors of individuals, businesses, societies, governments, and international relations.

97.5% of Earth's water is salt, 2% is ice, and we fight over 0.5% of freshwater. We can capture trillions of tons of water from the atmosphere (rain) or desalinate ocean water. Technology will make abundant water abundant for everyone, not in usable form but in how we think about it.

People retire at 65 or 70 for one of three reasons: they're in pain, low on energy, or forced to retire. If at 65-70 you've got all the energy, all the capabilities, everything you've ever had and more, it's going to be a boom for global GDP if we allow people to continue working. A new period of life will emerge where people start their next startup, get their next university degree, explore the world. We shut down people's earning capacity at 65—why? If they don't have to, that's a huge economic window of opportunity.

Organizational aptitude of humans (parenting, finance, politics) has been a historical disappointment; putting increasingly powerful technology into hands of people that may not be good is a major risk not discussed enough, and despite warning letters about AI, no jurisdictions are regulating the known problems.
“the organizational aptitude of human beings, unless it's taken over by tech, and then I want to know who controls that tech, uh is has been a constant historical disappointment, not just not just politically, but in terms of parenting, in terms of financial uh moving forward. This is a huge issue, and and putting putting the hands of powerful, increasingly powerful tech into into people that may not be good, uh is is something that I don't see talked enough about. There was a warning letter about the AI chatbot. Nothing is moving in any any jurisdictions as to how to try and look at what problems they've raised”
Globalization after World War II, initiated by the United States opening the seas so partners could trade freely and access any market in exchange for alliance against the Soviets, generated the greatest prosperity and security the world has ever seen.
“at the end of World War II, the Americans found themselves facing off against Stalin on the plains of Europe, and it was a war we knew we could not win. We knew we needed tens of millions of people to stand not behind us or with us, but in front of us to serve as cannon fodder. And that meant bribing them, and our bribe was globalization. We used our navy to open the seas so that anyone could go anywhere and interface with any partner and access any commodity and any product and sell into any market if in exchange you would join us against the Soviets, and it worked. And it generated the greatest prosperity and security the world has ever seen”
Pre-industrialization, people lived on farms where children were free labor, so they had as many as they could support plus one. After industrialization and urbanization, children were no longer free labor but a source of expenses, causing a demographic shift: from the 1970s-1990s there was a bulge of young workers with few dependents; from the 2000s-2010s there were mature workers at peak earnings with low expenses; but in the 2020s the population is aging out with mass retirement approaching.

But then Stalin brought us globalization and industrialization and urbanization and all the new industrial jobs were in town so we moved in to take them. Well, in town kids aren't free labor. They're just a source of migraines so you just fast forward 30 years to the '70s to the '90s we entered this weird period where we had huge numbers of young workers and huge amounts of consumption because of it but not a lot of kids that we had to spend money on”
We now have more individuals empowered with technology than ever before, with interconnected global bandwidth allowing AI-assisted coding at unprecedented speeds. The cost of innovation has demonetized dramatically (genome sequencing fell from $100 million to $200, coding now requires only natural language explanation), and entrepreneurs who used to require 50-200 people can now create valuable companies with 2-3 people, resulting in a Cambrian explosion of innovation.
“what's happening is we have more individuals more empowered with technology than ever before. We have created an interconnected globe where people have gigabit bandwidth with anywhere on the planet. They now have the ability to use AI to code at a speed like never before. The cost is demonetizing of the ability to innovate and create, right? It used to be that it would cost you a hundred million dollars to sequence a genome, it's now down at 200 bucks. Your ability to code used to require a massive amount of education. Now, you can code just by, you know, explaining through natural language what you want. So, the speed of innovation is exploding onto the scene. And the number of individuals who've got access to this technology is greater than any time ever in human history. And entrepreneurs that used to require, you know, 50 or 100 or 200 people to create a company are now creating a company that's delivering a valuable asset or resource with two or three people. So, I think we're seeing a Cambrian explosion of innovation”
Saved time is the best definition of prosperity. Every human on the planet has 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week, and it's how you use that time that differentiates wealth and capabilities. Google saved us from going to libraries, ChatGPT is giving us increased expected performance per unit time, so we are resetting expected performance and it's exploding. Our ability to solve problems, create new products, and create prosperity is increasing at an exponential rate because of these technologies.

Keeping mental acuity firm throughout your 60s and 70s is the single most important technology to watch because if you can do that, we get an extra 70 million people in the United States who can be part of whatever the future solution and struggles are rather than being part of the problem.

Abundant for whom is determined by geography and demographic structure. Western Hemisphere looks good because the US and Mexico have relatively young demographics and didn't industrialize as quickly, so birth rates haven't fallen as much. This buys a half-century transition period versus Europe's less-than-a-decade period. This allows the US/Canada/Mexico to expand supply chains and retool faster.
“Geographics geographic factors and demographic factors are not the same everywhere. Some countries are aging faster than others, others have better borders and better economic geography. And as a rule gross oversimplification, the Western Hemisphere looks pretty good. They in many cases industrialized on a slower rate or from a later start, so their birth rates haven't fallen nearly as much and what I I outlined in my opener is less true for them with the United States being one of the youngest demographics in the world as well as Mexico. So, we have a transition period here that's going to be a half a century as opposed to what they're going to have to do in Europe, which is going to be in less than a decade”
In the 2020s, aging workers are retiring en masse, and developed nations now face a period where they must come up with economic systems that work without investment, consumption, or production—and 'we're not going to get that first right on our first try.'
“But this too is only a moment in time. And in the 2020s we're now aging out. Whether it's Spain or Italy or Germany or Japan or Korea or Taiwan or China or Thailand this is the end of the road because that bulge now hits mass retirement and we have to come up with something that works without investment or consumption or production. And we're not going to get that first right on our first try.”
Electrification pushed back the night and enabled women's rights by freeing time for non-household activities; holding onto these electrification advantages (which require globalization) is the single biggest challenge, risking significant regression in the next 15 years if globalization is lost.
“Electrification allowed us to push back the night. That gave us the women's rights movement cuz all of a sudden women could have time to do things that they were not related to household. Holding those advantages is our single biggest challenge. If we lose China, if we lose the capital that comes from a positive demographic structure, our ability to hold the line on industrialization itself is at risk. And electrification requires globalization and we could see a significant regression in the next 15 years”
A new species of rice is being developed that can have multiple crops per planting season, and soy (a protein plant rather than starch plant) is going to be a real game changer. Growing an entire cow just to get meat will eventually be seen as insane when you can just grow the protein needed for a good burger through cultivated meat.
“I I agree 100% with you, Peter. You know, it is we're seeing incredible we're seeing a new species of rice that are able to have multiple crops per per planting and for those who are concerned about GMO, listen, GMOs never killed anybody, but I can guarantee you it saved hundreds of millions of lives. I'm less interested in rice. Soy, I think is the one that's going to be the real game changer because it's a protein plant instead of a starch plant. We also have vertical farming and cultivated meats coming online. The idea that we have to eat food the way it's always been produced, in other words, to grow an entire cow to get access to meat is going to be seen as insane in the future”
The speaker is far more concerned about powerful individuals without restrictions on their actions than about powerful countries getting desperate. This is a different sort of problem.

AI will ultimately become the best education system and best healthcare system available to both the poorest and wealthiest children via AI platforms.

As of December of last year, half of the world's baby boomers had already retired and liquidated their savings, causing capital costs to triple and threatening to triple again in the next few years.

Diamandis disagrees with the need for a system 'breather'; AI and quantum technologies will allow re-engineering of supply chains faster than industrial-age methods, creating shortcuts that avoid multi-decade rebuilding; linear extrapolation of old timelines is incorrect when new technologies accelerate the process.
“the only thing I would say is it's a linear extrapolation to believe that re-engineering the supply chain will take as long as it has because we've got we've got capabilities coming from AI that are going to help us much more rapidly re-engineer. We have we haven't talked about quantum technologies coming down the pike that are going to be impacting material science and biology in an extraordinary fashion. So, I think if we were going to try and re-replicate the old school system we we've developed over the industrial military complex of the last century, yeah, it will take many, many decades. But I think we have shortcuts to be had based upon technology”
Democracy has blossomed over the last century: in 1900, about 1% of countries had universal voting rights; today, it's 96%.

Over the last 123 years, we have seen World War I, World War II, the Spanish flu, the Vietnam War where 150 million people died needlessly, yet the world has gotten extraordinarily better by almost every measure. This is not a straight and linear path but one with ups and downs.

Global life expectancy has more than doubled over the last 70 years, from roughly 40 years old to now hitting 75.

The Cold War ended in 1992, and since then the United States in a series of ever more nationalist political contests has elected leaders wanting to dismantle globalization faster—the road and direction away from globalization is a strongly bipartisan issue.

And the biggest difference between Trump and Biden when it comes to international economics is that Biden was able to hire a grammar checker. The road hasn't changed and this is a very strongly bipartisan issue”
Major shifts in economic models take at least a couple of decades and are messy. The shift from imperialism to globalization took the better part of five decades and gave us two world wars and the Great Depression.

Climate change is definitely a big issue, but predicting it on a zip-code basis is unrealistic because our math isn't good enough yet. The real problem is not having the tools to deal with it yet. Making solar panels requires seven times more energy than making aluminum, and we're probably going to lose most polysilicon production capacity when China breaks down, creating an industrial production bottleneck.
“climate change is definitely a big issue. Anyone who thinks they can predict it on a zip code by zip code basis, I think is a little crazy cuz our math just isn't that good yet. My concern isn't on this topic isn't so much that we don't have the tools. It's that we don't have the tools. Yeah, to deal with it yet. Uh I think the best example I can give you is what it takes to put up a solar panel. Uh aluminum is the most energy intensive of the primary industries that we have. If you look at steel and fertilizer and the rest. Taking raw silicon and turning it into a finished silicon panel requires seven times the energy that it takes to make the same volume of aluminum. And we're probably going to lose most of our capacity to produce polysilicon at scale when the Chinese break down”
Malevolent use of AI is the speaker's biggest concern over the next 1-5 years, with the 2024 election likely being patient zero. Loss of privacy is a countervailing force—it's hard to hide things more than ever. It will be a white hat versus black hat race with AI being used to detect malevolent AI usage. The question is whether human nature is ultimately good or bad; the speaker believes it's ultimately good, and entrepreneurs will solve problems because the world's largest problems are the world's biggest business opportunities.
“there's no question that we're going to see malevolent use of AI, and it's my biggest concern over the next 1 to 5 years. I think we're going to see the election be patient zero uh in this situation. I think, uh on the flip side, uh what's going on is uh what I would call loss of privacy uh is going to be a countervailing force. It's hard to hide things more than ever before. So, uh you know, it's going to be a white hat, black hat uh race in terms of AI being used to help determine uh malevolent AI's usage”
The oldest millennials turn 45 next year and are no longer 'the young bucks'; the next generation is small and 'kind of antisocial,' ending the environment that enabled rapid technological advancement.

So, the environment that has allowed us to push the technological envelope so far, so fast, so consistently, it's already behind us”
GMOs have never killed anybody, but GMOs have saved hundreds of millions of lives. Genetic modification is both safe and essential for food security.

There is more time than most think for managing AI risks because chip production constraints will cause delays, and unlike previous technological revolutions, we are discussing AI ethics in real time (Congress held open sessions on AI ethics), which gives us better warning than before.

Uh if we have a problem with the chip production, which I think we're going to, that buys us a few more years right there. And the fact that we're already having these discussions, I mean, think about everything that is going on in the American Congress right now. What a mess it is. They still found a time over the last several weeks to have an open session about the ethics of artificial intelligence. So, unlike previous technological revolutions, where we come very late to the game, we're discussing this one as it unfolds”
In the 2040s, we will make it over the hump and double the size of the industrial plant; we will largely be immune to international shocks with local workers serving local markets using local resources; this will be the fastest economic growth in the history of Canada, Mexico, and the US, driven by breakdown of the old system.
“I think we're going to make it over the hump. I think we're going to succeed in doubling the size of the industrial plant. And I think we're going to make it through to when the millennials' kids enter the market and rebalance our demographics here. I don't think it's going to take till 2050. I think 2040 will be plenty of time and we will have a system where we are largely immune to international shocks and we have local workers serving local markets using local resources. And getting there is going to be the fastest economic growth in the history of Canada, Mexico, and the United States. It's not a good story, it's a great story. It's a story of growth.”

Supply chains have historically followed cost: from Appalachia (women with sewing machines) to Mexico (NAFTA) to India/China (WTO). During COVID we ran out of clothes. Some facilities in North Carolina have now been built that are 2 acres under one roof, processing raw cotton to finished clothes with a staff of two, producing cheaper end products than Bangladesh. This shows what re-industrialization will look like when incentives shift.

Russia and China are two major powers that will vanish from the world over the next generation or two; the question is whether it happens fast or slow. When countries feel cornered with nothing to lose, chances of them doing something they normally wouldn't rises. However, China doesn't command top technology—it imports all server time and chips needed for AI—and the U.S. is already building walls in that space. Russia's KGB leadership considered spreading nuclear weapons to salt the earth in 1987 but decided not to. Even in the darkest hour, the desire to end the human condition doesn't exist.
