Within living memory, a child failing to learn to read was attributed to laziness and stupidity until the discovery of dyslexia's micro-architectural cortical basis removed the moral blame and, crucially, opened the door to better remediation tools; this is a worked example of subtracting free-will-laden judgment that improved both compassion and intervention.
