America's strategy against China per the National Security Strategy has three prongs: (1) economically strangle China by cutting off its trade access to resources (the Trump corollary cutting China off from South American copper, lithium, food and oil); (2) treat the wealth of allies like Japan and South Korea as economic tools against China; and (3) divide-and-rule by encouraging Japan to escalate conflict with China while America itself may back off militarily.
