Solzhenitsyn discovered Russian philosophy and literature partly from Soviet education that reintroduced Tolstoy and Dostoevsky under Stalin, and partly from seeking out unorthodox figures outside official Soviet schooling, which he did more extensively when he worked at the Hoover Institution librarian archives, discovering reinforcements of views he had developed on his own.
