Construction of the Sagrada Família began on March 19, 1882, under architect Francisco de Paula de Villar, who designed it in Gothic style similar to the Sanctuary of Loretto; Bocabella later fired de Villar because he felt the design lacked grandeur, and Professor Joan Martorell recommended his young student Antoni Gaudí as a replacement.
