The regime had multiple vulnerabilities including economic problems, Eastern European satellites in revolt (Hungary 1956, Czechoslovakia 1968 Prague Spring) that became sources of vulnerability rather than security, and Solzhenitsyn as a unique threat that they had no effective response to.
