Russell's Human Knowledge (1947-48) attempted to organize scientific knowledge through deduction but discovered that direct empirical verification of generalizations provides insufficient premises for complete deductive explanation of scientific knowledge, forcing him to introduce additional non-empirical premises he called scientific postulates.
