Research on identity priming shows that people behave in ways consistent with their perceived identity or aspirational identity: when people see themselves as voters they are more likely to vote; when they see themselves as eco-friendly they are more likely to recycle; conversely, when people hold negative identity labels about themselves they act in ways that align with those negative labels and needlessly hold themselves back from growth.
