IMI began Negev development in the early 1990s under secrecy; initial blueprints were approved in 1992 with rumors of prototype exports to small wars in El Salvador for combat field testing; production models were first manufactured in 1995, entered official military trials in 1996, and were officially adopted by the IDF as standard issue squad automatic weapon in 1997.
