Around the year 2000 at a Mind and Life meeting, the Dalai Lama told Davidson that his tradition has many methods for managing disturbing emotions and urged scientists to take them out of the religious context, study them rigorously in the lab, and if beneficial, spread them widely—a directive that helped catalyze modern meditation research.
