Projection Bias Sustains Conflict

Humans are remarkably bad at knowing what other people think and tend to stubbornly project their own preferences and beliefs onto adversaries; each side in a conflict assumes its own retaliatory act is obviously just and proportionate and that the other side will recognize it and not escalate, which repeatedly fuels cycles of violence as in Northern Ireland.
