Free elections would reveal true preferences in theocracies

We cannot know whether people in brainwashed or theocratic societies (North Korea, Saudi Arabia, ISIS-controlled areas) actually endorse their conditions; only a free and fair election would reveal whether the brainwashing took hold or whether, like the emperor with no clothes, the people are savvier and would vote to change things.
